Lavender Fields of Wisconsin

A sea of purple is immediately calming when visitors happen upon a lavender field. Most people think of Provance, France when they dream of these magnificent. But, as of 2014 one only needs to travel as far as Washing Island in Door County Wisconsin to take in the joys of lavender!

I recently took the ferry to the Island for exactly that reason. Stunning! With two fields on the same road, the blooms were in full glory. An annual Lavender Festival takes place at their peak bloom, mid-July. I went just a week past prime. With the older fields partially harvested already, the younger blooms were still up and coming and on full, purple-saturated display. Bees buzz around the flowerbuds drunk on their nectar and are too busy to notice a few humans enjoying the same plants.

Inside the bright red building you can find anything lavender that your heart desires. From bath and spa products to spice blends, to culinary quality essential oils. Even your tastebuds will be pleased with offerings from the small cafe' boasting confections to coffees, to sandwiches.

I recommend anyone stops to smell the lavender once in their lifetime. It is a truly decadent experience!
